Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about ordering, blending and using Flavour Theory.
Orders & delivery
How long will my order take to arrive?
Everything is blended fresh to order in small batches, so please allow 5–10 working days for delivery. You'll get a dispatch email with tracking as soon as it's on its way.
Why does it take a little longer than other shops?
We don't keep big vats of pre-made rub sitting on a shelf. Each blend - and especially your own creations from The Lab - is mixed, weighed and labelled to order so it reaches you as fresh as possible. The short wait is the trade-off for that freshness.
How much does delivery cost?
UK delivery is a flat £3.95, and free on orders over £35. You'll always see the exact cost at checkout before you pay.
Do you ship outside the UK?
Right now we ship within the UK only. If you'd like to order from elsewhere, email us and we'll see what we can arrange.
Can I track my order?
Yes - once your order is dispatched you'll receive an email with a tracking link.
Can I change or cancel my order?
Get in touch as soon as you can. We can usually amend or cancel before your blends go into production, but once a made-to-order blend has been mixed we're unable to cancel it.
My order hasn't arrived or arrived damaged — what now?
We're sorry! Email hello@flavourtheory.co.uk with your order number (and a photo if it's damaged) and we'll put it right.
The Lab & custom blends
What is The Lab?
The Lab is our design-your-own-rub tool. Shape the flavour on the wheel - sweet, salt, heat, smoke, herb and more - name your blend, and we make it to order. Same quality as our house range, just yours.
How much does a custom blend cost?
Custom blends are a flat £9.95 for 200g, whatever combination you choose.
Can I save my blend and reorder it?
Yes - name your blend and you can reorder the exact recipe any time. Create an account to keep all your blends in one place.
Can you make it hotter, milder or salt-free?
Absolutely - that's the whole point. Drag the heat (or any flavour) wherever you want it. For something very specific, like no salt at all, just get in touch.
Flavour & using the rubs
How do I use a rub?
Pat your food dry, add a little oil so the rub sticks, then sprinkle generously and massage it in - roughly 1–2 tablespoons per 500g of meat or veg. Works low and slow or hot and fast.
Are these only for barbecue?
Not at all. They're brilliant in the oven, in a pan, on roast veg, halloumi, popcorn and chips - anywhere you want more flavour.
How spicy are they?
Each blend shows a heat rating from 1 to 5 on its page. Most of the range sits at 1–2 (gentle, family-friendly); Red Pepper Heat is our hottest at 3.
Which blend should I start with?
Ember House - our balanced, smoky, gently sweet all-rounder that works on almost anything.
Ingredients, allergens & diet
What's in your rubs?
Real spices, herbs, natural sugars and salt - nothing else. No fillers, anti-caking agents, artificial flavours or added MSG. Full ingredients are on every product page and product label.
Do they contain allergens?
Some blends contain mustard, and a few may contain celery - both are clearly listed on each product page and the label. Our blends are mixed in a kitchen that handles other spices, so we can't guarantee against cross-contamination. If you have a serious allergy, please contact us first.
Are they vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free?
All our blends are made from plant-based ingredients, so they suit vegetarians and vegans, and we don't add gluten-containing ingredients. As they're made in a shared kitchen, we can't certify them as free-from.
Is there added MSG or anti-caking agent?
No. For savoury depth we use natural ingredients like mushroom powder. Because there's no anti-caking agent, your rub may clump a little in humidity - just give the container a shake.
Storage, payment & returns
How should I store it and how long does it keep?
Keep the tin sealed in a cool, dry cupboard out of direct sunlight, and sprinkle rather than dipping in wet hands. Each tin has a best-before date on the base - for the best flavour, use within 12 months of opening.
What payment methods do you accept?
All major cards, plus Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay - through Shopify's secure checkout.
Can I return my order?
As these are food products - and custom blends are made to order - we can't accept returns for change of mind. If anything arrives faulty, damaged or not as described, contact us within 14 days and we'll sort it out.
